It imparts training to the officers of the elite Indian Revenue Service (IRS) who are selected through the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, popularly known as the Civil Services Examination. It is also the Regional training centre of the World Customs Organization (WCO) for the South-Asia region. It has nine regional training centres across India which hold induction training for its Group B (both Gazetted and Non-Gazetted) and Group C officers. After completing their foundation course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie the Direct Recruits of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) undergo an intensive training in taxation laws, international trade, narcotics laws, financial administration of India. Being the apex institute of Government of India for capacity building in the field of indirect taxation, it also plays a vital role in international capacity building by imparting training to officers of various countries in the field of Customs, Drug laws and Environment protection. The Direct Recruits undergoing training in this Academy are officially referred to as the Assistant Commissioner Probationers. Upon completion of Departmental Training and their various field attachments, the officers are posted to their respective charges beginning with the entry grade of Assistant Commissioner of Customs, Central Excise or Service Tax. The faculty at NACEN consists of in-house serving IRS officials as well as visiting experts on relevant subjects.
